The eye is one of the few organs that one shouldn't wait on going to the E.R. or whatever. Problems tend to rapidly escalate to serious.
Tom's suggestion sounds good to me... prescription safety glasses with side shields. I would need them with bifocals too.
Lasik is primarily helpful for distance vision. When you are doing close work people and are middle aged, you would probably also need the bifocal lens part, even if you have had lasik.
