Can you provide additional information? What kind of vehicle? Are you using any external amplifiers, cross over circuits, or a sub-woofer. Did you use an adapter to connect it to your truck?
If it's a straight forward replacement of the stock radio Keith is correct. Either you have a defective unit or something is wired wrong. If it's wired wrong it could be causing the unit to over heat. When it over heats a safety circuit could be reducing the volume to keep from permanently damaging your unit.

However switching the polarity of a single set of speaker wires will NOT cause an over heating problem. If the wires to a single speaker are switched it will cause a reduction of bass volume. You can always tell when someone does this by comparing the amount of bass when the balance is centered verses all the way to one side. If the base volume goes down when the balance is centered the speakers are out of phase and the bass notes from the two speakers are canceling each other. When the polarity of one speaker is reversed it will pull or push the speaker cone in the opposite direction of the other speaker. I hope that helps. I've worked in electronics for over 30 years including owning my own shop.
