Richard,
When I had my dirt track car, I also cut the filter apart, then cut the ends off and opened up the filter like an accordian to see what was in it, it was always a hassel to do this, but, needed to be done. I now have a drag car, that I put on a System 1 oil filter, the end cap screws off and there is a fine micron screen inside you pull out and check for filings, wash it off and reinstall it. No more cutting, no more buying new filters, it works great. I can't remember offhand what micron the screen is, but I think it was like 5 microns. They sell for $134.99 at Jegs, it screws on like a regular filter. I just bought a remote mount bracket from them and going to plumb it in on the front engine plate, so it's easier to get to and not have to get under the car. Just a thought for you, if you hadn't heard of them before.
