Growing up my family had a 1929 Dodge roadster w/ flathead 6. The forward end of the exhaust manifold had a movable flap that allowed the exhaust gas to by pass the exhaust system completely. It just blew out into the engine compartment fire & all... It was cable operated from the dash & the control knob said "Manifold heat control".
I am also familiar w/ the good old boy style "cut outs" the home made version was a short section of 2.5 inch galvanised pipe weld/spliced into the down pipe w/ a threaded pipe cap. Friday & Saturday nights you simply unscrewed the cap for that blessed rumble.
