What you're talking about is a "Flemish eye". Sounds fancy but it's real easy to do, not like a full woven eye splice where you need to pry the strands apart with marlin spikes. A flemish eye with one crosby clamp on it is stronger than a simple loop with three clamps. Even if you have a rigging shop put a crimped eye on it, which I would recommend to avoid catching on stuff, they should crimp the sleeve over a Flemish eye rather than over a simple loop. This is what the guy at Dunlap's in Everett taught me, and he rigged the new anchor cables for the Evergreen Point floating bridge so I think he knows what he's talking about.

Actually, a well-made Flemish eye will hold pretty well without any clamp at all on it, just some seizing wire or even eleven just electrical tape wrapped around it to keep the ends in place. My rigging book says that such an eye will develop 70% of the strength of the rope. If nothing else, it's worth it to learn how to make a Flemish eye in case you need to fix a broken end in the field.
