I've always used a thin coat of spray copper and have not had any problems. Would not try to brush anything on as it will always be uneven. I tend to think some sort of sealer is necessary for any of the old-style real copper head gaskets, but I can't prove it. Look closely for any erosion of head or block around cylinders as nothing will seal that up for long.
