Tach rebuilder?

I have a reallly nice looking vintage Sun tach and matching transmitter. Only thing is one or the other or both dont work. Does anyone have any experiance with repairing these? I wanted to check here before a shot in the dark from someone out of Hemmings. I know there are shops that convert them over to run on 12 volt and eliminate the batteries but they seem to want your first born male. I should have done it last spring, they could have had him back then! We seem to get along alot better now so I would rather pay for the repair.
