If it were my truck (it would have a Cummins in it...) I would go with a more modern transmission that is a bolt up to the GM/Chevy block (SM465 or a NV4500 ??) and then get a PTO for the new transmisson. I suspect that it would be easier to do than hook up the stock transmission to the 454...

I know a couple of folks with big blocks in M37's. As long as you are easy on the gas pedal, things should be ok with the driveline. Use the torque to get you around and not the rpm's...
