I know Bernie personally, from before his target-shooting episode. He is a liberal, and is a registered Democrat. He lives in a Blue State. He is a tad...er...peculiar.
His mistake was spilling his guts to the cops. He could have just thrown the (unregistered) pistol in the Hudson River, and walked away.
His big mouth, and I suppose, remorse, got him in trouble. He acted the way all of us would have, I think, in the same situation.(Both during and after the shootings) His conscience got the better of him. Definitely not criminal material.
He is now working off the books as an electronics engineer for another friend of ours, because anything he makes on the books will be attached by the victims and their families.
