I click on the "View New Posts" as soon as I enter Gordon's forum, then before I leave I hit the "Mark all Forums Read" link. Works well.
I'm in the process of putting together a forum for the residency program at the hospital I work for, and I used Gordon's forum (vBulletin) as an example of a script with a lot of features. Registration is a must, and they liked the email notification, and photo upload. features, so we'll be using something along those lines.
