I had a lengthy discussion with an engineer at Rodadeaco who make Emergency Shutdowns. He did not say I had to have the shutdown, just that he felt it was important and for sure he would have one on his diesels. They make various models from a simple cable pull to fully automatic depending on engine rpm.

After I sent him pictures of the Carryall/4BTA and my Power Wagons, he got real talkative. Since the shutdowns they make are expensive, he suggested that one could easily be made, and that he had done just that on some of his projects. He told me that he has used a Carb body with the butterfly left in place. He made adapters so it could be mounted in line in the air intake hose. The butterfly was simple cable operated with a spring to hold it closed when tripped. He stressed that the Carb body you choose MUST be the same size throat at your air intake line. Also the shut down MUST be placed as close as possible to where the air intake line actually enters the engine. He stressed this placement was criticle, since when operated in a emergency run away the air flow will be so great, a hose could colaspe and pull off a fitting and defeat the shutdown.

As Marty shared many things can create a runaway on a 4 0r 6 B series Cummins. If your oil seals on the pressure oil line feeding the turbo leak, that oil will feed the engine and start a runaway. Shutting down the fuel does not count in stopping the engine. The engineer also stressed if a diesel runs away and you cant immediately shut it down with a shut down device or by blocking the air intake.....GET AWAY FAST and her her rip. Its most likly going to blow and you dont want to have your head over the engine.

Here is the web site to Rodadeaco company in Canada. I was told all diesels in Canada working in oil fields are required to have emergency shutdowns.
