What causes diesel runaway in 4 stroke conventional diesel engines? I have recently learned the 2 stroke dertoits can runaway if you blow a seal in the supercharger and it pumps the engine oil into the combustion. The engine literally eats itself apart! That is why many industrial applications and marine applications use some sort of flapper valve in the intake to shut down the air.
But I remember someone telling Paul that he needed a air shutoff for his 4BT Cummins. Why? Can the same thing happen with the turbocharger? Or is there something else? The diesel engines I have (Cummins and Isuzu now) shut off by pulling a T handle that shuts down the fuel to the injection pump. Do I need to think of some other type of emergency shut down device?
