Thats all fine until you have a big cam in an engine. Hi performance engines with bigger cams dont produce hardly any vacuum. Sometimes not enough to even run power brakes. Your vacuum gauge method wont work worth a hoot here. I have had luck using a vacuum gauge on a 318 adusting to the highest vacuum setting but have had no luck on a 440. When doing so on a 440 it retards the timing so bad the 440 has no power.

To do it right you need a total advance timing light. Generally 38 degree's total is about all any of the v8 mopars want. The vacuum advance of the dist should be no more then 12. Sometimes you have to lower the total degree's. If it has a ping on acceleration you could adjust the vacuum advance on the distributor with the allen wrench. I see no need to recurve a distributor until you are building a hi performance engine.
