Setting Timing With Vacuum Gauge

A question for those experienced with setting timing with vacuum gauges. After seeing posts from a couple of people suggesting using a vacuum gauge instead of a timing light to set timing, I've tried it on my last couple of tune ups. On both a 251 and a 318, I end up with timing approximately 5 (318) and 10 (251) degrees advanced beyond spec. Is that too much? Am I at risk of doing engine damage running that far advanced?
