Thermostat Problem

My truck was having heating problems so I checked the thermostat and found it in two pieces. So I took it out figuring this was the source of the problem and that with out it the engine would run cooler. Big Mistake!

This may be true with most modern cars but not engines with this external bypass. With out the thermo the hot water leaving the head goes right back to the suction of the water pump and is sent to the distribution tube to the exhaust valves. When O would get up to 45 mph the engine would start to backfire and miss. I put a new #155 thermostat in today and the overheating problem went away.
