I found out over the last summer that I could take apart a starter and the parts from a '58 and a '59 PG WILL interchange! the mounting flange/housing where it bolts up to your bell housing even fits! I unbolted my starter to adjust some of the parts of the clutch linkage(I'd had to rebuild the ENTIRE linkage set! + replace the clutch in a gravel driveway by myself without a trans cradle!,what a pain,i found that an engine hoist would fit through the door and i could drop the trans to the ground and lift it back up fairly easily though the re-install was a bit rough!) when as I pulled out the starter a piece of the mounting flange broke off, right across the bolt hole! aparently it had been broken a long time ago and was just clinging to life. I got desperate and went up to the other polysphere I had in the shed(my truck has a newer 318 poly, and the original 4 speed trans) and pulled the starter, took it apart, renewed the commutator, clened it etc. with dad's help(he's an electrician, very helpful in this instance!) and compared the parts, test fit them and without modification the renewed starter bolted right up,and crankedno problem. and here I let the damn truck sit for three months thinking I couldn't afford to fix the starter! now it runs again! and boy 4 wheeling in the mud is fun, i was also really impressed with the trucks' amazing flexibility andaxle travel, GO DODGE!
