There are probably more reasons that went into this design than we will ever know, including the desire to make common parts between axle assemblies and using up surplus WWII parts.

What we do now is the benefits of this design, including:

- Clearance for the rear PTO driveline.
- Emergency brake drum and band are up high for ground clearance. (Which if mounted on transmission as usual, would not work if transfer case in was shifted into neutral).
- Reduced drive line angle by utilizing the lower output shaft as opposed to mounting to the higher transfer case output shaft even if using a centered differential.
- Both differentials now dig the same rut while driving through deep mud instead of independant ruts which would result in more drag and more chance of getting stuck (assuming you are always traveling the same direction in existing ruts). Ha Ha!
