I agree it's a definite "NOT", especially since modern electrical science has given us flashlights. My dad used to tell about one of his farm neighbors, probably back in the 30s who used a match to check his gas on a regular basis and somehow never got blown up. Maybe the gas wasn't as flammable back then. Don't recall if it was the same guy that finally took a sledge hammer to the engine and busted it to pieces one day when it wouldn't start.
