I always use modern unleaded gas in my old coleman camp stoves, and it seems to work fine. It ruins the mantles of a coleman lantern and the catalyst of a coleman catalytic heater (speaking from experience) but it hasn't done any harm to the stove. I hope I'm not poisoning myself with any sort of fumes that come out of modern unleaded gas. I can see why you wouldn't want to cook over leaded gas, with little lead particles getting in the food.
