Oil and water are mechanical, amps is amps either voltage. About $16 will get you an electronic voltage reducer (zener diode and resistor) for a specific load for the gas gauge. Or build your own cheaper with infi from the link below.

And for those folks who say " Generators were good enough for 60 years", have you noticed that handcranks were finally phased out when alternators came in?
