Why were FFPW's created?

I was watching a program last night and it was explaining why certain pieces of hardware were created. It got me wondering what caused the PW to be created the way it was.

We all know that when WWll was over, GI's returned home after having run the war Dodges and wanted the trucks for their own purposes. But why did the military ask for them to be built in the first place back in 1941?
*What Branch had it commissioned to be built?
*What was the original design requirement that lead to a truck with these qualities? *Why did it use a flathead 6 with a 2 speed transfer case, 6Volt, 5.86 rear end?
What was the inspiration for this trucks qualities?

I don't know the answers to the above, but I have wondered who and why they created a beast that continues to capture us 50-60 years later.

Merry Christmas to everyone.
