Judd,
We recently set up a test environment (server and 2 workstations) and went on a mission to find the best spyware/malware removal and prevention tool available for our customers by intentionally infected the test machines with spyware. Then I ghosted the infected images and tried every different spyware removal tool we could find (ghosted so the infected OS could be reset so each product would be tested equally). Each machine was infected with a variety of products similar to what our techs find in the field. Quite frankly, Spybot and Ad-Aware were worth about what you pay for them. There were a number of items they simply would not remove (Gator was one, XJupiter was another).

Many of the products we tested would remove only parts of installed spyware, and the spyware would re-install itself after 1 or 2 reboots.

Some of the products would not recognize several levels of spyware altogether (there are 9 levels modeled after Dante's Inferno).

HR2929 introduced legistlation to curb spyware, however it is impossible to enforce. In my opinion, however well intentioned it was, HR2929 was a waste of time and taxpayers money.

Keep in mind that this was about 4 months ago, and other products have come on the market since then. However, there were 2 products at that time that stood head and shoulders above the rest. Spysweeper from Webroot Software and Pest Patrol.

There are a couple of things that you will want to keep in mind. First, select a product that will completely clean your PC (sorry, Ad-Aware free version won't do it even in Safe Mode, neither will SpyBot). Second, look for a product that will keep your computer clean. Both Spysweeper and Pest Patrol run in the background just like your antivirus software. Not only will they remove existing pests, but they will prevent reinfections.

We decided to become a reseller for Webroot (the enterprise version only) because of the effectiveness of the product. However the stand alone version is every bit as good, and it is a product that I can highly recommend. We have installed Spysweeper in a number of city and county government networks and everyone is extremely pleased with the effectiveness of the product. Spysweeper had a fully functioning trial download on their site.
