you might want to consider just changing the ring and pinions in your axles. cost wise, it might actually end up being less, and you would avoid the problems you mention.
many ratios are available for your axles. depending on your tire sizes (you don't mention your tire size), you might go with 4:10 or 4:56. given your trailer weight, i would not think you would want anything taller than the 4.10.
i have a 1967 W300 with a 440 and 4:88 gears, along with a NP 540 overdrive five speed. i know what you mean with regard to gearing.
