Good question. Most of the time the drive gear is on the side. but it can be switched. The problem is the angle of the teeth. I think perhaps with a combination of switching the input gear and flipping it over, if flippable, it could be used in any of the 4 possible positions. That's assuming the right and left sides mesh with the same gear inside the transmission, with the same "stick-out".
