Steve good luck to him. I have a small 20 ton crane and a small businees that I run on the side. (I am also a career Firefighter) I have extensive Crane and Rigging experience and would like to pass on some help to your son. First I am not familiar with the program that he is looking to attend so I can not honestly give it a fair evaluation. Second if he or anyone here for that matter has any questions regarding this topic please e-mail me. I instruct heavy lifting, rigging and crane awareness and operations as they relate to emergency scenes. I have instructed in California and in New England for FEMA and numerous Fire departments. I also am a Rescue I and II instructor for the New Hampshire Fire Academ, so I have some great resources to assist me as well.

Some things that will help him with both crane operations and rigging fundamentals are:
1. A Strong understanding of Basic Algebra
and Geometry.
2. Get him a copy of IPT's Crane and
Rigging Handbook by Ronald G. Garby
It is an outstanding and easy reading
manual. Considered the "Bible" by many in
the "business."
3. If he kows how to weld great. If he can
get a welding program under his belt
even better.The documentation helps when
applying for positions. Many times field
"adjustments" must be made and welding
can be the ace in the hole.
4. Probably the most important thing for him is to absorb as much in the "field" as he can. Safety takes precidence above all else. As his experience level grows he has to trust his instincts and not be bullied into doing something that doesn't "feel" right. Again Good Luck to him and you as well. Happy and Safe Holidays to all. Pray for our troops here and abroad. Steve
