I believe what was implied is that the injuries were so severe that once the vehicle was lifted that nothing else could be done to preserve the life. Similar instance happened here whereas a locomotive switchman was caught in the coupler mechanism between two railcars at his waist. Coupler acted as a tourniquet and kept the blood to his upper extremities, but from the waist down nothing was left. Rescue unit personel called in the family and gave time for last rites. When the time came to unhook the train, the switchman lost his life due to the massive lost of blood below his injuries.
