I've had air compressors in garages for years and use them when ever I need them. Never had a problem with freezing. I am sure if it was -20 out and the thing sat for a month it may react just like any other mechanical device in extreme cold and not work real well. You may find air tools are not working like they once did in the summer time.

If its real cold and things dont seem to be working right its probably because air doesnt flow good when its cold. In the winter on the railroad it takes longer to pump up the trainline air brake pressure and sometimes in extreme cold situations train length can only be so many thousand feet because the air simply wont pump up.
