Just noted in my statement above that I may be confusing where I say that vehicles that are not recognized by the software that DMV is using will continue to use the "car" tag. I meant that the car tag will be renewed, but that you should (and it is your responsibility as the owner) go in and upgrade the tag to either a WEIGHTED or COMMERCIAL tag as appropriate. For vehicles that are currently undertagged that the system recognizes, weighted tags will be issued automatically...
Heavier vehicles place higher axle loads on the pavements, so it was felt that it was more appropriate to tax heavier vehicles (on a proportionate basis) than to raise the registration fees accross the board...
