The absolute maximum length assumes you can wind all the cable neatly back onto the spool. This is usually not possible under adverse field conditions, especially if you're by yourself, and lumpy winding will mean you can't get it all on the spool. I like the idea of putting less on the spool, but carrying an extra 50' or 100' length for longer reaches. At least one binder chain should also be carried, to avoid damaging the cable in case you need to anchor to something like a large boulder or a really large tree, or hook onto a vehicle frame at two points in order to get the proper pull.
