American Axle is the old axle division of gm. They spun it off and it is it's own independent company. Dodge and Jeep were having big time quality control issues with Dana, Dana would not agree to meet CHryslers new quality standards at the new reduced supplier rates that Chrysler wanted, basicly they wanted a better product at a 20% reduction in cost. American Axle said yes they could meet the design criteria and bid and won the bid.
