Very similar process to what I had to do for my M37 when I purchased it without a title... I have the process detailed on my website for getting my title in NC.
Part of the process includes a check to see if the the VIN numbers are "good".
I also agree wholeheartedly that the thing to do is to write everything down that has happened and to take it in person to local law enformcement. Have the folks on your end check it out, not the ones on the seller's end...
