Jill and I have begun to tear down the Poly 318 from her Townie. This engine ran like a bat out of hell but smoked like a steam engine. I changed the valve stem seals in the heads.....I mean I put valve stem seals in the heads, I removed no complete seals! This didn't help at all so I suspected the rings were the problem. We removed the heads yesterday and the cylinder walls look great but there is a ridge at the top of the bores. None of the pistons are marked as oversize. My main question.... are there many replacement parts available for this engine? People keep asking me why we don't put a later model 318 in the PPE? Not everyone has a Poly! Of course they wouldn't ask that question if I ever got around to picking up my 392 Hemi.
