Since you have small children active countermeasures such as trip wires , tiger pits and improvised claymores are most likely out. The best way to discourage thieves is is deny them cover. Give the impression your home is always occupied. A driveway and walkway photo electric triggered bell will let you know if someone enters your property. Most thieves are lazy, so they will want a vehicle close by to haul away their booty. You need to make that difficult or impossible.
If you should encounter the miscreants and dispatch them, Make sure you bury them deep enough so the critters don't dig them up. Lawyers love signs that say trespassers will be shot or the like. It allows them to do with the legal system, what the burglar tried and failed at.
In the event they have something else in mind,Teach your wife to shoot. Of course that means you have be polite for the rest of your life. Seriously though, have a frank discussion with your wife and discuss contingencies. What are you truly willing to do to protect your family ? Many of us have no problem staring down a vicous animal or human for that matter. But when it comes to talking to your loved ones about a tough subject, crime , drugs etc.
There are predators out there guys, the two legged kind. You can't always be there to protect your family. It's up to you to teach them how to do it for themselves.
