We had a very simular problem. Our truck had a real tough time starting, with low voltage at the coil. It stumped us bad enough that we installed a push button switch in the dash that was between the battery and the coil. Push the button and try to start it and all worked fine after we learned the, one push on the petal and pull the choke out until it popped a few times, push the choke most of the way in and it starts every time. When we started to get the other systems to work we found that the power wire to the panel lights which has very near the same color code as the power wire to the fuel gage were swapped. Once we swapped the wires our voltages were all right and it works like it is supposed too. So it looks like you have a crossed wire that is draining voltage from the system so that by the time it gets to the coil you only have 4.5 volts left.
