Actually, it was Flatt and Scruggs that made it popular in the movie. The song was actually written in the 30's by Arthur Smith. It was originally called "Fueding Banjos". When the movie changed the name to Dueling Banjos and used it, Smith sued and eventually won since it was his song.
However to a banjo player, its the most overplayed song out there.
