When I started at my previous job, I did so on the understanding that I was a machinist and not a welder. Well, within a few months I was still the machinist but also became THE welder. Kind of had fun doing it. Especially on Caterpillar dozer blades and buckets with their special welding rods.

The longest I welded at one time was on a very big build-up project. I can not remember the make of the old MIG welder, but it was a good one. I welded for three days straight, only stopping for my scheduled breaks and to change spools and tips. It was in August and the temperatures were in the high 90's each day. I wore a cotton T-shirt, my cotton uniform shirt, and cotton sweatshirt over all of that. I burned clear through all three and got a nasty blister on my stomach. By the time I smelled the smoke, my beard was almost ready to catch fire. I think I lost 15 lbs. those three days.

The whole time I worked in the machine shops, I could use their equipment to make anything I wanted for myself on my own time. I never bought any equipment for home. Now, I have been looking at the Millermatic 251. A little overkill can be good.
