Hi Mike,
Looks like we get to disagree on this one. From Rovers own history, they started after WWII, in 1948, by using Jeep CJ2 chassis and axles for the first two years. While innovative for the UK, and found in any place that the UK ruled, in Africa, India and Asia etc., they have never enjoyed the popularity or numbers that the Willy's and now Chrysler Jeep have. Rovers shared the reliability problems common to nearly all UK vehicles, complicated overthought systems with poor reliability. They were basically hand built in the early years, with fit and finish problems common to British car building. A hand built part from one Rover may or may not fit another Rover. Their one claim to fame is the Paris to Dakar race which is a huge Rover marketing tool. Less well known is the attrition rate in this race is something like 50%. Since Rover was purchased by ford, the quality has improved somewhat, just as it has at Jaguar and Aston Martin. Primarily due to improved quality control standards and the introduction of modern manufacturing techniques. That being said, their original intended use was very similar to what Dodge and Jeep tried to market their forst post war vehicles as; farm and agriculture related work horses
