During the battle of Fredericksburg in the CIvil War, the troops saw the northern lights at night. It was extremely rare to see them that far south, and it has been said that the vast majority of the southern soldiers had never seen them before. Many took it as a sign from God. Unfortunately (for them) one battle did not make the war.
I have never seen them in the Virginia/Maryland area and I am 51.
