Seems like you might want to check your heat riser valve and exhaust gas crossover?
Several factory 440's had heat shields, but many did not. Most 383's and 400's didn't have a full heat shield. Seems there is a problem somewhere, as some sort of restriction of exhaust gas flow or something. Though 440's are known to leak at the valve covers I have never heard of one running right that could melt valve cover gaskets!?
