Q1. You can't check backlash by rotating the yoke because:

- You may have worn spider and side gears
- Loose Ring gear nuts
- If the side gear thrust washers are made out of bakelite like the 3/4 tons, those are probably worn out adding to the play

Q2. Backlash has to be checked at each quarter turn of the ring gear in case the gear is warped using the less run out point of the four. You will need to turn the adjusters clockwise facing the passenger side of the truck – AFTER YOU HAVE ADJUSTED THE PINION GEAR BEARING PLAY!!

Q3. You will need to break the weld of the thrust pad and screw and adjust to .010 between the pad and ring gear side, then re-weld. The pad prevents deflection of the ring gear under torque – it is necessary!

Q4. I am working on one now, however it will be completed over the next several months (winter project)

Proper backlash and new spider/side gears/thrust washers/shafts result in very little movement
