As for visual differences, there aren't many. The BB-A&LA and \6 trannies are basically the same, except for the size of the trans bell, smaller for the A & LA motors and larger for the big blocks. Some if not all A & LA (small blocks) and the \6 trans are the same and will bolt up.
All early transfer cases, until 1974 or 5 were divorced, after that time they were married with a few exceptions. Early NP 200's, 201, and 205's were divorced, later NP 203, 208 and NP205's were married.
Now that being said, you have to match spline diameters and spline counts on the input shafts and some auto transmission engines (the cranks) were not drilled for manual applications which can cause problems, but Mopar makes bushing kits for some swap applications.
