Have you seen Old Faithful in the winter?

My Boy Scout troop made a winter snowmobile trip into Yellowstone when I was a kid. We didn’t have much extra cash growing up so I sold candy door to door and joined in other fund raising projects to meet the modest expense of a hotel room for a night and snowmobile rental for a day. It was an amazing experience. The Hot Springs, Old Faithful, and herds of elk and buffalo… all draped in crisp cold air and a heavy blanket of white. The buffalo and elk were totally untroubled by the snowmobiles. We had to stop frequently as they had the right of way and had no fear in exercising it.

Speed and route were strictly controlled and nature, man, and machine seemed to get along just fine. Years later I started seeing little banner ads on web sites “Vote now! Should snowmobiles be allowed in Yellowstone?!?!” Like it was grave robbing or something. Even though I had moved far away by that time, and hadn’t had the chance to go again, it saddened and angered me.

The arguments made against them seemed to me to be from folks who had never had the experience and envision yahoos chasing elk across frozen lakes or something. Not the reality at all. I hope the ban stays lifted long enough for me to share that winter experience with my kids. The boys are only 9 though, so it’s still a few years away, and I fear the worse.

I do not see any harm in motorized vehicles using the same routes in the winter that they do in the summer.
