For many years, all snowmobile traffic in Yellowstone Park has been restricted to groomed trails specifically for the snowmobiles. These trails are nearly all on top of the existing roads in the park, so they have no real impact on the terrain. Persons operating snowmobiles off the designated trails are subject to big fines. The park rangers do watch all snowmobile traffice closely and are very good at catching and citing offenders. What is the real difference in touring Yellowstone Park in a car, truck or motorcycle in the warmer months versus doing the same thing on a snowmobile, using the same roads, in the winter? Certainly, the older 2-stroke engines were noisy and smoky, but they are being phased out quickly in favor of 4-stroke engines. There still needs to be some reasonableness here. I do not advocate turning anyone loose with a 4X4 to go where ever they want, but I sure support the same vehicle using designated trails and roads.
