That happened to me going down the road at 50MPH. Just about wrecked an engine that only had a few thousand miles on it. I took a half moon file to all of the nicks and gouges in the rods to get rid of the sharp edges and bring the damage down to virgin material. The machine shop wanted to rebuild the whole engine again. I decided to take my chances. Luckily all of the cylinder wall damage was below the lowest point of piston ring travel so emery cloth smoothed down the high spots where metal was "dug out". The cam shaft also took quite a beating. I have put probably 35,000 miles on the engine since then and am still keeping my fingers crossed. I didn't find the fuel pump spring until about 4 years later. It was intact and behind one of the valve covers. Never did figure out how it got through the oil passage way and into that area. I did rebuild the ail pump and clean the pan of all the metal shavings.

Good luck.

Clint
