This is the same thing that Im going through on a trailtruck Im building. I'm using a WC52 frame(same motor/transfercase mounting arrangement as pw) with a two speed T/C out of a PW. I've got a good 318 and 727 ready to go in but the set up is too long(apx. 60" from fan to tip of tailshaft) to fit between the radiator and divorced T/C. I've also been looking for a short/no tailshaft 727 and come up with the same info on applications provided in the previous posts by others. To answer your question, the long(18") tailshaft tranny will not fit between the motor and stock T/C by my measurements. Sorry.
If you come up with any other good info on doing this type of swap I'd like to hear about it. This scenario is what's holding up progress on my trailtruck as we speak!
