The heavy wire is almost certainly the armature "ARM" (or sometimes "GEN") wire, and after going from the terminal box through the firewall, it should go to the ammeter. The thin wire is the field "FLD" wire. Nothing should be destroyed by hooking them up wrong for a short time. After starting the engine, immediately check to see that the ammeter is pointing in the "charge" direction, and that the voltage on the battery is more than it was before you started the engine. You may need to rev the engine up a bit to get it to charge, as the old generators did not always make current at idle speed.
