In the days before detergent motor oil, filters didnt do much good. Without detergents to hold the crud suspended in the oil, the sludge just settled out anydamwhere. With detergent to keep the crap in the oil til it got to the filter, the dirt gets trapped in the filter, leaving clean oil. WITH DETERGENTS FILTERS ARE MANDATORY, or the oil will retain the abrasives and continue to wear the engine.
