At the top of the cylinder where the piston stops it's travel, over time, the upper compression ring will wear the cylinder wall leaving a ridge just above the ring. Since the ring also wears, when you install new rings you can break the new ring and piston. This ridge must be removed before you remove the piston from the cylinder out the top. The tool can be bought from an auto store and you can do the work yourself.
