Start your cut at the base of the hill, the full width of the blade unless you can approach it from the top of the hill. I would build a road base the blade width and half again as much to allow for some room to work. If the side of the hill is to your left, use angle cuts to push material towards the right edge of the road base and work inward to the hill’s side. Try to keep the cat's tracks on the road base and not on the loose material, ESPECIALLY IF IT'S STEEP. It’s going to be slow but can be done. Make sure your trimming any hillside material as you go. DON’T UNDER CUT THE HILLSIDE!! The D4 can push a lot of material up hill if it is loose material - have any dynamite or if you’re not in a hurry wait till rain softens the ground and then build it. A D8 or better would make quick work of it unless you're having to deal with rocks also.
