The three speed and four speed transmissions have different starters. If you take both apart you will see that the detent on the cast housing that goes into the bellhosuing and also bolts to it has a detent. This detent shifts the starter counter clockwise on a four speed enough that the positive cable will just about ground out on your motor. But it is an easy swap if you have a four speed starter casting.
